So a couple of ~~weeks~~ months ago (this is how horrible I am at keeping up with this, I blame the holidays, work, life, etc) the boyf and I went to this Big Cat Wildlife Preservation or "Cat Haven" in Dunlap, CA... which is only about an hour or less away from the city I live in. It's crazy how close something so amazing can be to where you live. It was the first super cold day of the winter, and while it should've been a pretty drive with all the tree's leaves turning their shades of orange, yellow and red, there was never really a true "fall" here this season so all the leaves turned at once about a week later, and with a crazy wind storm, were blown off soon after. Sadness! So, we saw about one or two trees with "fall color".
Nonetheless, it was an awesome day trip even though it was bitterly cold. But, I was (almost) prepared with lots of layers, except for the rain that soon followed our visit to see all the Big cats. Should've brought my umbrella. And water repellant shoes. We decided we would definitely make another visit soon. These kitties they have there are the ones that appear on late night shows like Conan or Letterman and such. The Cheetah they have at the haven has appeared in many a TV commercials, too. A celebrity cat!

Oh, yeah. Since my last post (months ago) I dyed my blonde streak blue, and then it turned green, and then I re-dyed it blonde and it's a mixture between turquoise, blonde, and a greenish... something. I'm shooting for a white fade to violet and purple next. We'll see.

So, I got this great idea to pretend to be a ballet dancer again. Here's my grand jeté attempt in non-stretch Levi's. Not bad for a 3 year retired ballerina, eh?

I am so in love with these vagabond boots, I cannot even deal! I've decided my favorite type of shoe is one that gives height but is comfortable. Wedges usually fall under that category unless the wedge is steep and the platform is small - then it's like you're on your tippy toes all day long. I'm all about the "flatform" ish type of wedge. These boots are soooooo amazingly comfortable. I wear them all day at work and my feet feel fine at the end of the day! I highly recommend checking out this brand because I bought these suckers about a month ago and I've selected these as my go-to boots for winter. Go check out the vagabond collection at solestruck.com - I think I might save up for the "Gaga 540" flatform in the "mandarine" color. Mmmm. shoes.

So, that's that. This Insight shirt was perfect for a warm night walking down the Palm Springs main drag. It was so breezy and like I wasn't wearing anything, even though I really was. I toned it down with the jeans though. I felt too skimpy in shorts!

plagues & pleasures // hiker chic

And now we're back to the Palm Springs trip, day two: our pursuit of finding the lost and forgotten cities and "beaches" of California's Salton Sea. What we found? A ghost town. A creepy desolate one. With random, inhabited houses scattered between abandoned, dirty and falling apart houses.

After this trip we had to find out more, so thankfully, Netflix had the documentary about the atrocity on DVD. You can rent it here: Plagues and Pleasures on The Salton Sea.

This is how they describe it:
"John Waters narrates this quirky exploration of the Salton Sea, the massive Southern California lake that was created by accident a century ago, became a popular desert resort and has since developed into a refuge for a community of oddballs. Filmmakers Chris Metzler and Jeff Springer explain the environmental mistakes that formed the sea and interview many of the area's current residents, including an aging nudist and a Hungarian revolutionary."

Just google "The Salton Sea" and you'll get all the information you ever wanted. I love weird and quirky stuff like this. Live for it!

The documentary was only more fitting when I found out John Waters was the narrator. I pictured his rail thin mustache the whole time he spoke. Creepy. Fitting.

And who knew Sonny Bono was a fighter for cleaning up and repairing the damage that was done? Way to go.

So, guess what?! I finally found the closest I'll get to creepers and/or the Prada flatforms from a million seasons ago... I'm in love, to say the least. I'm not sure if these are really my style, but I don't really know what my style is anymore. It changes on the weekly, sometimes daily... So, regardless of that they're patent leather (win), and have the espadrille style embroidery (win), and some striping for sportiness... which I dig, too. AND they are comfortable enough for me to wear for an 8 hour work day and I'm still over 6 feet tall in them. Ha!

I guess this outfit is ironic seeing as how I'm wearing this Chanel style vintage blouse (which I have gotten countless compliments on and it only cost me less than $1!) and this hippie-ish painted floral backpack that I've been wearing as my purse for the last month, and then my most comfortable if not ill-flattering stretchy cigarette pants from my work. Needless to say, I continue to be a walking contradiction of styles and decades...

ANYWAYS.

I highly recommend you check out romwe.com. They have really cute and fashionable finds for fairly cheap/reasonable prices. As far as these shoes are concerned, I'm a happy customer! They are well made, and are super comfortable too!

The spring of Palms

So, yeah... hey, I'm alive. What's up blog-o-sphere?

Let's just pretend these photos were taken just oh, last week as opposed to a couple months ago... whoops!

My boyfriend and I have a travel itch but, with our comfortable yet small financial means we are restricted to the confines of the state of California... for the most part, for now. However, this summer we have travelled quite a distance around this state and let me tell you, it's like a million places in one! I highly recommend visiting if you have never been here, and I'm not just saying LA or San Francisco. I'm talkin' Joshua Tree National Park, The Salton Sea, Gold Country, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, the various and vastly different coastal cities. I mean, there is so much!

This trip we took was to Palm Springs. With our trusty Expedia iPhone app, we were able to snag a gorgeous little Inn for a reasonable cost for a couple nights. I fell in love with the room. All white with hints of black. Very cool and serene...

Thankfully, we were there when the high temps were no more than about 95 degrees (fahrenheit) and so the evenings and mornings were breezy, but warm.

Boyf snapped these pics of me before we took a walk down the main drag of Palm Springs and found a place to eat. He was testing out his fancy new 50mm lens, but I was a poor subject because I kept moving and thus turned out a little blurry... oh, well. I like the look, what do you think?

Well, that's all for now, kiddos. It's been nice talking to you. Today I worked 7AM-3PM and then had class 4-7, so needless to say, I'm wiped out! However, I can officially tell you that I am now the Assistant Merchandiser for my hometown's Urban Outfitters store. And let me say, putting in the long hours to do merchandising and get paid for dressing up mannequins and arranging things neatly and sensibly is one hell of a job! It's like I get to play dress up for every different kind of girl every day. Almost... sorta?

I can only anticipate what is to come, there are details that I just can't share yet, but I will, soon!

I don't know anymore.

These shoes! I thrifted them recently and they are the same pair that I wore to shreds in high school. I loved them so much, so it's like I get to wear them all over again!

I really don't know how to keep up this blog, do I? I guess what it comes down to is struggling with the idea of maintaing such a presence on the internet, while wanting to maintain a clear presence in my everyday non-internet life. And, who really cares to read about what I wore or what I did, anyways? It's like an existential crises I'm having here. Way too deep for the blogosphere, right? Anyways, I'm really trying. I made my layout drab and simple, before the re-design, because I think I just couldn't stand how it looked before. This is helping me try to update right now.

These were taken a million years ago, I don't even know what to say anymore.

I'm really going to make an effort this week. Especially since I have a back-load of photos to put up!

School ended last week and I went on a mini-vacation to Pacific Grove, central coast in California, and then today I just got back from a trip to Palm Springs in southern California. I went to the Salton Sea and Joshua Tree! I am exhausted but they were two great vacations. I'm back and ready to get the shop fully stocked of many new vintage items I've been collection on my travels, and start getting this blog back into shape!

I have some really exciting things in the works, I can't wait to share! A blog re-design, much new content, and lots of pictures from the trips are awaiting you all. I hope you understand my absence. I plan on catching up on all of your blogs tonight! Me and the couch and my kitten have a date. ;)

Leigh Viner

I'm taking a break from studying to dive into the new direction I'd like to take this blog. First post? A plug for my newfound love of artist Leigh Viner.

"Facehunter series 13" print of an original pen, watercolor and digital illustration.

(this is the first piece I saw of Leigh's)

one of my favorites, "Lolly" inspired by A/W 2010/11 Christian Dior Couture show in Paris.

She is a photographer, artist, designer... all of the above, really. In a nutshell, she is amazing. I stumbled across one of her illustrations/paintings through tumblr. Since I've been more and more concerned with proper credit for all the images I reblog on my tumblr, I searched the source, to which it was "pintrest" which really isn't the true source, but I found the artist's name at least. Popped it into google and voila, her website! (which has an awesome soundtrack and flow to each section of her website design, btw...)

"Layered" pencil, pen and watercolor illustration.

I feel a real intimate connection with her art. It is so beautifully ethereal, each of the illustrations of women gives a strong emotional presence while remaining somewhat fragile and graceful. I'm drawn to her use of color in deliberate but minimal ways. What is amazing is that she is mostly self taught and describes herself as being inspired by fashion, which is probably another reason I am drawn to her art.

"Push" acrylic and watercolor painting.

The best part of it all? She has an etsy shop with surprisingly affordable prints in various sizes to offer. I don't think you can imagine how ecstatic I was to find that I could actually own something she created. Lately I've been finding a lack of inspiration for my own art, whether it be my photography or recycling DIY art projects (more of that to come..) or my collages... or even my fashion! I am inspired not just by other's style and fashion, but art, music and the like. I feel that one can be inspired by anything for whatever outlet they choose to express themselves. And Leigh Viner has really inspired me... and she finds inspiration in everything around her.

"Orange Velvet" inspired by and based on a photograph by Steven Meisel for Dior's Fall 2010 Campaign of Karlie Kloss. (The color orange was also "on her mind" with Halloween and the fall leaves.)

This lovely lady also has a blog which features her art and inspiration in photography, fashion, design and more. I love that when she presents a new piece of her art on her blog, she sometimes adds a musical track and her fashion and color inspiration for the piece. It really helps me to connect to the piece more intimately and to her as an artist. I also love how it combines so many art forms together. I've always been drawn to multimedia artists who have shows that have musical accompaniment or something tactile besides just their work of art. It gives a whole other dimension to the experience. (especially since I'm not viewing her art in a studio or show atmosphere, but through a digital interface...)

I haven't worn this eye shadow since college, I hope I don't ACTUALLY get pink eye from wearing 4 year old eye shadow... woops. Also, I think I'm digging the left/right hand having different colored polish. I'm so trashy. Not really. but kind of.

Isn't this dress so girly for me? I fell in love with it as soon as it came to our store, and I was patient enough for it to go on sale and snag it for much less of a cost. It's really comfortable and cutesy but wearing it with these boots made it feel more... me? Also, I wasn't sure about these hot pink over-the-knee socks my bf got me, but I think I am going to love wearing them. They add a perfect amount of bright color to an outfit to keep me current in the trends and they satisfy my minimal craving of a splash of color. Imagine this outfit without the socks?! It'd be so much more boring...

So whether or not you remember the band Hot, Hot, Heat or not, it really doesn't matter. What does matter is that you get a way to listen to this band I discovered about a month ago, Tennis...

Female lead vocalist, kinda surf-y and upbeat, really cute and fun music. My favorite tracks are "Marathon" and "Cape Dory" off of their album Cape Dory. But honestly, their album is kind of one where I can listen to it all the way through and not want to skip ahead to my favorite songs... which is hard to do with me. I love to listen to the album while I'm driving. I often find myself singing along and doing a little car dance. It's fun.

These photos, except the last one, didn't come out nearly as good as I'd hoped. For one, I brought my tri-pod along but forgot my remote, which means my camera kept auto focusing on the building instead of me. And then, to top it off, the sun was awkward and the wind was making it difficult for me to keep a straight face or even have my face visible. But, well, you get the idea. At least I'm not modeling in front of my bare wall and electrical outlet, right?! There are so many amazing places to take outfit shots around my condo downtown, so I might as well start...

This hat always makes me think of Boy George. I love him, kinda. I've been dressing pretty dark and goth lately, so this was a nice switch up. I'm loving this striped sweater. These shoes are surprisingly comfortable, which I guess actually makes sense because they are made by Aerosoles! (i.e. comfy shoes) Usually their shoes are pretty grandma but I loved these. I'm loving my new J Brand jeans I got for a steal on sale at Anthropologie. Best feeling ever.

Only a few more weeks of school and then the semester is over, and I cannot wait. I managed to take a mini-roadtrip, hang out with my friends and fam, work a lot and clean out my closet (sort of) during my spring break. It wasn't long enough!

I've been loving these Marc by Marc Jacobs patent leather ankle strap wedges for awhile now, my favorite being these seafoam green color and then a pair that are a cognac/mustardy tone. I've been trying to find the perfect shorts for this summer and haven't stumbled across any yet, except for these Vero Moda ones that are so cute but I hate buying things like shorts online, I am never sure of fit or size! I kind of like this whole, "I'm-taking-outfit-pictures-in-front-of-a-brightly-colored-wall" thing. Maybe I should start incorporating the color into my wardrobe? I know the trendy thing right now is pops of primary colors, but to be honest, I've never been a fan! (gasps) However, this does not mean I don't like it on other people... I'm just such a sucker for earth tones. I do like to surprise myself and wear pops of color every now and then... and finding myself drawn to more color for spring and summer.

For the record, I think I'm over winter! I'm ready for spring. I'm ready for shorts and dresses and trying to wear skirts like a lady. I have lots of ideas brewing for my spring revival wardrobe and I'm ready to start wearing em! Also, I'm ready for outfit pictures outdoors and bike rides and walks and sun and parks! Because before I know, it will be the deathly hot and dry summer that is always here in my hometown... yeuch.

I can't just be showing my midriff all over the place! Anyways, I think wearing a modest blazer or jacket over it was the perfect balance between too sexy and then just comfortable and chic. I almost forgot about these shoes, so glad I dug them out of the closet!

Such a good album, I highly recommend the aforementioned song as well as "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright", "Blowin' in the Wind" and "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall".

I've been a Bob Dylan fan since I was young, my dad being a fan himself... but I became a true fan when I went to college and started reading his lyrics and appreciating him more as a song writer. His voice leaves a lot to be desired if you listen to him for too long, but overall, I think he was a brilliant artist and well, in his day, pretty cute, too! I also very much appreciate his counteractive nature of the "norm" and his sometimes absurd comments. However, I also agree with a lot of his commentary on social, political and civil affairs in the world. He is definitely a particular taste when it comes to his sound, so if you aren't a fan of his voice or music, I still suggest looking at his lyrics. Maybe I'll do a Bob Dylan post once a week on my favorite songs of his. There is, after all, quite a few! His discography spans decades and decades. Also, his son, Jakob Dylan is über sexy and talented as a musical artist, as well! haha...

I know I haven't done so well at keeping up with this updating, but at least it's happening! Even if it is few and far between. As usual, I'm workin' on it! That's all for now.

Well, hello there! I know it's been, about, forever? Sometimes you just need a break from everything that you are connected to online. I took full advantage of my vacation by sleeping in, relaxing, working on my photography hobby and trying to see friends despite my failed attempt at a social life due to my recluse nature with all this rain and dreary weather! Anyhow, I've fully enjoyed my time off, and now it is time to kick off the year right for this blog and the rest of my online existence...

So, I'm on the home stretch! Just one more final to finish and turn in on Thursday, then the semester is officially over! I'm looking forward to having some free time to work on my vintage shop, blogging and some personal art/decorating projects and most importantly, time with my family and friends! I am hoping to make a small road trip, as well... we shall see. Also, my shirt wasn't so terribly wrinkled at the beginning of the day! =/

Meet my new love, Theodore Cosmo! Or, Theo. Or, Teddy. He is 12 weeks old and I adopted him on Saturday. He's a Maine Coon Tabby Mix and is a bundle of wonderfulness. He's affectionate, smart and spunky. I'm sure you'll be seeing quite a bit of him from now on... more pictures coming soon!

When he sleeps, he kneads the air... hehe.

Finally bought my favorite liquid eyeliner so I can do the cat eyes. It's a winter tradition for me. The best liquid liner I've found is Cover Girl Line Exact. It goes on so smoothly, the applicator is super lefty friendly and it lasts forever but is also easy to remove at the end of the day. What's your favorite liquid liner? Have you tried a gel liner that you like?

I miss those shoes.

So, I don't know if you've guessed this or not, but I am quite a shoe... fiend. That's the only way to describe it really. If I'm not really in the mood to try things on or go shopping, I am always in the mood to shop for shoes/try shoes on. It's just... I mean, you wear them everyday! I find that they are a good investment. I really wear my shoes down to the bone, too... you should see some oldies but goodies that were hard to let go even though I had worn out the entire sole and they were busting at the seems. I love shoes that. much. Ha!

Let's not get carried away, I rarely have ever spent more than $100 on a pair. However, I do purchase them much more than anything else, and usually new, at that - seeing as how I wear them down as it is. When I do buy vintage/second hand, they have to be in really great shape. I guess since I buy most of my clothing second hand or from thrift stores, it is nice to have well-made and comfortable shoes.

Only in the past year or so has my collection of heels increased. I'm not one for stilettos - my feet start to hurt really fast. I'm all about a good wedge. But, I do sometimes spring for a thick heel and those prove more comfortable than some might think. The wedge, however, in unbeatable in it's height and comfort. I could wear wedges all day long! Even if I'm over six feet tall in heels, I've gotten over my "tall girl" complex. I own it, now. Maybe it was those years of pointe shoe work and all the male dancers I partnered with being so much shorter than me once I stepped "en pointe" and was suddenly over 6 feet....

Anyways, wearing heels, it's kind of fun. Plus, I figure I only have what, 5 or 10 years left in me for heels so I might as well make the most of it now!

sort of. (in reference to the title of this post) I was doing so well for a minute (week) and then poof, busy busy busy again! Such is life. I'm not too worried about it, I'm super busy and loving every minute of it, even when I'm dead tired and exhausted. I have a little break in the storm this week due to Veterans day holiday on Thursday, and therefore also have Friday off... but there is still work to be done! Hoping for a big big etsy update, though.

I don't want this blog just to be outfit posts every update... and since I'm dedicating myself to one hour of internet "fun" a day, which means more updating, I'm coming up with ideas left and right! Some of these ideas, though, require a field trip of sorts for photographic proof or investigation. Anyways, I made an etsy treasury awhile back including vintage and handmade items that were similar to items I had seen in retail stores or in fashion magazines/blogs/runways that were on my fall wish list.

In the vain of the last post, I like to find similar items to pricey high-fashion or retail items at thrift stores, as well as on etsy... vintage or handmade items. In a sense of "recycling" buying vintage or previously worn clothing, and then with handmade I'm helping to support all the designers out there in the world that don't necessarily have the publicity or big bucks to become well known outside the etsy shop world. I enjoy etsy for this reason - it's international! You can buy something from the 1920s to something handmade in Australia. Love it.

Anyways, inspired by my etsy treasury, "fall wish list" seen here, some more wishlist items yet to be crossed off the list... part 1: shoes.

These two are just examples of the general idea I'm looking for. Of course, my shoe "wishful thinking" list is never-ending (which I should do a post about too) but in all practicality, these two are on my list. Clogs would be great during the winter months for working and teaching - I feel like they can be more versatile than people may think. I've been searching for the perfect pair for about a year - they need to be simple and no bells and whistles, but also not too tall and not too short or old-womanish. I know, I'm ridiculous.

As far as those desert boots, same thing! Wedges are super comfortable even if they're tall, and the lace up style is just so practical to dress up or down and with various styles... and I think I'm shooting for the rust color because I don't have anything like that in my shoe closet! I'm trying to steer clear of more black and more brown.

For some reason I think I’ve used this title for a blog post before? Oh well. I love the Clash! Also, I feel very London-ish in this outfit, whether I really am or not. It’s the oxfords and the hat and the blazer, I think. This is a great transitional look from summer to fall. Especially right now it’s cooler but also still sunny most days. So it’s nice to wear a lightweight but warm blazer but still be able to take it off and have a somewhat complete look. I love that this blazer matches my shoes so well! I’m not huge on matchy-matchy usually, but I like when a few elements can be tied together. Always love this red hat, too. Oh, how I’ve missed wearing hats. In the summer my hair and head just get sweaty and gross and “hat hair” is even worse when it’s warm!

I am still unsure how I feel about these super tight high waist cigarette jeans. I wouldn’t say I have the slimmest legs in the world, but I am tall so maybe it gives the appearance I do? I know there is a lot of debate as to whether or not certain people should wear skinny pants but my opinion is that anyone looks great in what they are wearing as long as they are comfortable and wear clothes that fit or are comfortable on their body. In other words, as long as you stay true to yourself and your comfort level in clothes – go for it!

We are all different shapes, sizes, heights, etc and I don’t think that should delineate who can wear what. I love the "community" of the online fashion blogging world, because I feel that for the most part, almost every single one of you (that I follow) stays true to yourself because you find that this community is very accepting and positive when it comes to everyones personal style. I know that even though I don’t have the same style as a lot of you, I find inspiration from a lot of you! I love that. We don’t have to have the exact same style for me to consider you an inspiration. A true voice in fashion is staying true to yourself – whatever that may be.

This ended up being some sort of fashion sermon of sorts, but it just came out! And maybe I haven't been jaded regarding the online fashion blogging world, but I like that we create fashion and trends, in a sense. It doesn't have to be the ones in the fashion world and who can afford all the pretty designer duds for every season. We are inspired by that world, no doubt, but we definitely are able to create our own world and our own style that represents our lifestyle and .... well, limitations!

The best thing about fashion, for me, is being able to find the "bargain" or vintage version of the latest trends and styles that I love from the fashion world. It's so satisfying!

Anyways, on another note... I have been stocking up the vintage "closet" for my etsy shop, and lately I've been slipping pieces into my own wardrobe more often than usual (whoops).

I just had to share this dress because it's just... perfect! And it fits well, to boot. I'm just wondering if it's going to be as versatile as I like items in my wardrobe to be? We shall see!

Really into the trousers for this fall - especially since I'm now a student teacher and have to dress semi-professional on a regular basis. I like being able to play with the idea of work wear and teacher appropriate clothing while still remaining young, fresh and chic! I've been finding so many trousers at the thrift stores lately and am having to pick and choose which ones to keep and which ones to put in the Vintage Strings shop! I have a couple great pairs that need to make an appearance soon that I won from Rock Paper Vintage! I've been trying to get a good variety of colors, fabrics and styles. This pair is particularly roomy and comfortable - pleated, high-waist and menswear inspired but with a wider leg. I love when trousers have elastic somewhere - so they're less constricting! I wasn't sure about rolling these up but I think I like it!?

So you can see I'm trying to update more. =) I have some less superficial ideas for posts, but that takes longer than outfit posts! I hope you don't mind in the meantime.. ha.

OH! But I am super excited to report on my latest vintage find. I've been searching for some cutout nude oxfords in my size for so long, and I finally found them! Lovely Liz from srysly liz just launched her vintage shop endeavor, Little Gray Suitcase. Cute name, right? You should check it out. It's just begun and I think she's off to a great start! I guess I am gettin' the hang of my schedule. Still, not much time for fun or play, I've realized. That's ok. Thanksgiving week I will have a bit of a break, and then I'll be done by the beginning of the third week of December! I can't wait to relax and not be stressed out so much. I'm trying to keep up with stretching and yoga and meditation when I can - for my sanity. Also attempting to keep my diet to healthy and nutrient-rich foods. No fast food, not a lot of cheese. I've become closer to vegan than I previously was and that is helping, I think! I can't afford to get sick... and I'm around kids everyday. Debating about a flu shot. Everyone tells me I need to get one but I haven't in so long because I always get sick when I get the shot! I don't know... probably will get it anyways.

I need to work harder on getting my rest, though. I usually go to bed before midnight but I think 11 o clock is the best time where I feel fully rested and fresh in the mornings. Regardless of the fact that I'm not a morning person, I do like the "dew" and the sun and the feel of the morning... and that there seems like so much day ahead of me at 11 AM!

Been trying to update the etsy regularly. And keep up with all my favorites on bloglovin'! I'm trying to fix all my links off to the right there... My sphere of blog favorites has increased dramatically but I gotta find a better way to list them all. It's such a booger to add them one at a time and arrange them on the blogger link list. I don't know. Also need to add some navigation links for this here blog. All in due time.

Miss you all and hope fall has come to visit you. It was a little warmer than I'd like today, but definitely cooling off. So excited for autumnal weather and the clothes and shoes and layers that go with it! Is it just me, or are the winter seasons just more inspiring? I don't feel as inspired in the summer months. too hot. I guess it just depends where you live.

Unintentional Hiatus

Being that I have student teaching, credential classes, two part time jobs, and my sanity to manage Monday through Friday, and on the weekend other things like keeping up with my laundry, exercise, groceries and cooking and keeping things organized and clean, and trying to spend time with my family and boyfriend and maybe friends... my plate is overflowing. all over the place, actually.

So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that although I miss blogging and chictopia and my other online hobbies that I enjoy, especially regularly updating my etsy shop, I'm really too busy. My body basically shut down on me today due to having student teaching, school, and working BOTH jobs in the same day yesterday. I had plenty of sleep but it is obvious that my body just can't handle the stress and rigor if I don't pace myself. Definitely will change my schedule so that I don't work two jobs in one day on top of everything else. Blech.

I've been trying to keep up with bloglovin' and worked a little on the blog layout tonight, but otherwise I'm finding it hard to feel motivated to do anything but relax and "veg" in my spare time. If I have any. This is the sacrifice I make. Expect sporadic updates in the next couple of months, but nothing will level out until December. Just wanted to give an update for all of my readers that I appreciate and let you all know, I'm alive. but, well, busy. very...very...busy. I should be asleep right now.

I will, also sporadically, be updating my tumblr.

Let's just say I can't wait for a vacation.

I am so happy to post this outfit because it was taken over a month ago and was never posted because I thought I had LOST the photographs for this outfit! So glad they turned up… because I’ve been living in this romper the past month or so!

I’ve worn a lot of rompers, sold a lot of rompers that I modeled for my etsy but this one I had to keep. It has cute intricate gold buttons up the front, a tie waist in the back, and the perfect “fluttery” sleeves and shorts that allow for a breezy coolness when wearing the one piece. Oh, and it’s definitely long enough for my long body. Ha! It can kind of look like a dress, too when I don’t wear a belt with it. It’s kind of oversized on me but I think that helps it’s versatility – when wearing it with a belt I can cinch it and create a different silhouette/shape than when I don’t wear a belt. It’s also very easy to dress up or down – the colors allow for a nice mixture of accessory options, as well. Overall, A+ romper find!

The only thing that was an issue concerned this lovely hole in the shorts... like someone was wearing it and it got caught in a fence or sharp object or something! I've since stitched it up to the best of my abilities and it looks just fine... It's all so fluttery and the pattern allows for a less noticeable stitch up job! Can you spy the hole in the above picture?

I've missed you all. School has begun and I have 2 jobs now plus the etsy biz so needless to say, it's been a little hectic! Working on getting into a routine and getting used to this.

a trip down memory lane

I know, I know. I've been MIA almost a week! Life, catches up. But, don't worry. It happens from time to time but I'm definitely back. I've been meaning to do a post like this for awhile, but was so busy with OTHER posts that it seemed a perfect "come back" post for this coming week...

Today's post is dedicated to "old Kelly" as in young Kelly... I think age 3, 8 and 10, respectively.

Seen with Dad wearing my favorite Giants shirt. I am now as tall if not a little taller than my dad. Some of my best traveling memories as a kid were when we went camping. I learned so much! I also learned how to blow bubbles with gum on one such trip. Never got the whistling down, though.. and since going to Lassen National Park and doing the "Junior Ranger" program, I have had an obsession with Jeffrey Pines and their strong scent of butterscotch. I will sniff one no matter what if I see one!

Let's just say, we all have that awkward phase... I am not embarrassed of this anymore. Ha! As you can see, I have a strong love for the San Francisco Giants. And tie dye. and purple. I had to post both of these photos because I am really proud of these beret/fez/beat nik whateveryouwanttocallthem hats that I had going on. They were my favorite hats! I wonder what happened to them... and my most amazing John Lennon style sunglasses - super cool. The second one is the winner of the most fashionable award, though. I mean, come on! My fez-style hat, scottie dog tee, gingham denim button up skirt, rainbow striped (toe) socks, and clogs. Whoa. And not to mention my too-cool-for-school arms crossed and one leg turned out. This is a fun post because two of the items I am wearing were basically, free! Thanks to chictopia.com and Scarpasa.com!

First, The purse I redeemed through chic swap! Basically, I listed an item worth X amount of chic tokens to redeem, and after someone redeemed the shoes I had listed, and I had shipped them off, I had that amount of chic tokens to redeem something for myself from another chictopia user! It’s a great way of “trading” that doesn’t directly involve any money transfer. (not exactly, anyhow.. read the FAQ HERE.)

SO, I had been looking for a purse exactly like this on all my thrifting excursions but to no avail. Then the lovely Liz, “playingwithfire” had this one listed and I knew that I instantly wanted it! and it was everything I hoped it would be. That Chanel-esque style but in navy and gold. I now have two navy purses, so I think I'm done now! (the other featured in the purple people eater post!)

Next, I’ve had a stock pile of “chic points” for awhile now but I’ve been waiting for the perfect thing to pop up on chic rewards! I had recently been loving Scarpasa’s additions to the chic rewards, and was waiting for a pair that I knew would suit me perfectly! So when I saw these Gaimo espadrilles pop up, it must’ve been fate because I was there right when they were available to be redeemed and I swooped them up!

And needless to say, I am in looooove. I’ve been really attracted to the nude/beige color for my feetsies and these are so comfortable and chic! They aren’t that tall of a heel (although everyone said I looked so tall when I was wearing them – because I am already tall!) which makes them great for everyday! I love the elastic straps with little studded adornments on the edges - gives them a little edge! The espadrille part is my favorite – very classic and original. I love. Scarpasa is having a sale right now so you should go check out their website. The espadrilles I redeemed are now $52 marked down from $125 - aka a great deal!

inspirational gals part 2

I guess I can't keep calling all these inspirational outfit posts "part 1,2,3,4,5" etc. because then I'd get to like part 30 and 45. (If I keep going that long.) What do you suggest? Or just stick with the parts? I don't know, I guess I could just switch up how I say "inspiring outfits" for the title post? Why do I care so much about the title? Who cares...Let's get to these outfits! Not only are these ladies fashionable and inspiring to me, they have some great blogs too... so don't forget to check them out if you haven't seen them already. ;)

Style is Style

Not only do I dig Lydia's style, she has a great blog too. And let me just say I loved every part of this outfit. The white blouse is perfect underneath the blue floral dress and I've been wanting some white socks like these and I think they go perfectly with the black strappy flats! She reminds me I have a lot of cute flats that I can work into an outfit and make them chic, sometimes I feel that only heels complete a "chic" outfit and she definitely proves me wrong! And, last but not least, those sunglasses? Amazing! Wearing hearts like it ain't no thing...

Old Hat Diary

Arielle shares my love of hats, first of all. I don't have nearly as many as she does, nor are mine as fabulous, but still, even so, we share a love! This hat and the shoes go together perfectly, and the dress is so divine and mixes all the right elements, placard pleating in the front and vertical buttons, a white peter pan collar, and beautiful draping lines. The black polka dot stockings add the perfect edge. I love how all the different elements come together!

If You Seek Style

I've been searching for some killer maxi dress looks to convince me that I can wear them and not feel like a fool, and this one put me over the edge to the point of "I NEED" this. haha! Anyways, this is so cool and casual and chic. The grey is simple so it's not like some over-powering print that really doesn't make me want to have a maxi dress... Some people pull it off, however, but it hasn't been enough to convince me that I can! This, however, is the exception. The belt at the waist, sitting loosely also gives that casual feel but creates a shape to the dress - accentuating the waist is something I'm always down for. The simple sandals, black clutch and aviators with her tousled long locks just complete it all perfectly.

Another lovely girl that I've been following on chictopia and on her blog for awhile now. I am loving these sandals and the adorable blue gingham dress with simple cardigan to match the shoes. I do like matching... not excessively or anything but I like when a cardigan and pair of shoes compliment one another like this - I like things to be tied together, not chaotic and crazy. Her hair off to the side in a loose braid just makes me think of summer. This outfit looks so cool and girly but still casual and comfortable. Love!

It's getting cooler! It was already below 78 yesterday around 10/11 PM and that was a good sign. Today it probably won't get higher than 94 degrees and let me tell you, that feels like a world of difference! I haven't had sweat dripping from any part of my body at all today. (ew) haha! I'm enjoying this... wearing jeans and don't feel like they're pasted onto my legs.

This was an outfit from yesterday, it was a bit hotter than today. I purchased this dress with a gift card I received for winning the "Chic in the City" contest on Chictopia.com! I was so happy to be able to get a gift certificate to one of my favorite local vintage/thrift shops "Yoshi Now!" and I found so many amazing things I haven't even worn them all/photographed them yet! I also was able to get my Boyf some track jackets/wind breakers (his fave) and a couple of vintage baseball bats. So cool.

This dress is super super comfortable! Classic 70s, a very unique purple color unlike anything in my wardrobe, and I love the cap sleeves. The elastic waist is kind of stretched out so it's even more comfortable because of that, and the fabric is super soft and lightweight - perfect. I almost forgot about this scarf and I think it went with the shoes perfectly!

Thrifted this amazing bucket bag while I was in Sacramento - I've been searching for one with a drawstring like this and it's not too big - just the right size. Score. Only $2, too! I've been a thrifting fiend lately so I gotta keep up with etsy shop - I've found a few things for myself and A LOT for the shop so I gotta keep updating before I get too busy when school starts, oh AND...

I start my position as a sales associate at Urban Outfitters next week! Can't wait to tell you all about it...

Hello hello! Short outfit and music update. The blouse and shorts are available on my etsy shop Vintage Strings. As always, even if I am going to sell a dress or blouse or what have you, I like to style an outfit for the items, so that way the person searching my shop can see it worn and well, styled! It also makes shooting for the shop much more fun. =)

My music plug today is Memoryhouse! Loving them, and I came across them through the Boyf who booked them for a show here in Fresno this coming Wednesday. They remind me of Beach House, who I also really really love!

So, for you Fresnans reading this, you really should come out and see this show! Get more information on lovethecaptive.com! Their tour dates are also on their myspace page. After Fresno, they will hit LA, Santa Cruz and San Francisco before they head to Ontario (which is where they are from!) and then the East Coast! If you dig their tunes, which you can hear on their myspace and I'm sure many other places on the web, I suggest you go. The Fresno show is only $8 if you get your tickets ahead of time, and even at the door $12 isn't too bad for two amazing bands.

Oh, they are touring with Baths who is also an amazing one man show by the talented Will Wiesenfeld. Check him out, too!

Ahoy, mate! Ha ha... just kidding. Let me just say, I should have gotten into all the lovely gloves my Grammy gave me from her closet because they are amazing! I think they just sealed the deal on this outfit perfectly. I know this is on the edge of “costume” but I don’t really care…

First, I LOVE these shoes! I never thought white sandals would become my favorite but right now, especially this summer, they are perfect. I try not wear a lot of black in the summer, too hot, so the white is perfect to match up with the light and airy colors I am wearing for this hot summer. The best part is that they are closed toe, so I can’t wait to wear them in the winter with socks! The ankle strap is super flattering and dainty. I love the simple wooden wedge – it adds some contrast to the all white of the shoe, and allows for more versatility in choosing an outfit based on the color of the shoe. I paired them with an ensemble that really makes all the white stand out!

This sailor tunic is so super cute! I’m not sure if it was supposed to be a mini-mini dress – there are long slits on the sides, but I am definitely too tall and modest to pull it off as a mini. So, I just layered a lux airy dress underneath! And added the belt to accentuate the waist. Pretty much in love with this outfit…

shorts remix part 1

Hello all, I'm alive! I've been sick for over a week and am still feeling the effects of it. Let's just say that I had an awful, mean cold and the after-effects are similar to that of vertigo. Basically, the cold/infection affected my inner ear, made it swell, and thus gives the sensation of vertigo/dizziness. Weird, huh? This is the second time it has happened to me, and let's just say, it is no fun at all! I feel bad for people that deal with this all of their life. I have to take motion sickness medicine to help the symptoms, and otherwise, just have to wait for it to go away.

Anyways, enough of that! I have some exciting news coming this week, so stay tuned. But this post is part one of 3 for the "shorts remix" - I will do a post a day with these shorts with a different look. It is inspired by the Teen Vogue contest on Chictopia that I entered a few days ago. I know that you've probably seen other blogs jump on the "remix bandwagon" if you will, but I really feel this is something so pertinent to me and what I represent. I don't have a lot of $$ and I'm a fan of thrifting and shopping sales, but I also like to have items in my wardrobe that are versatile. Whether that be for multiple seasons or can be worn many different ways, many different times, I am a fan o a versatile piece! Sometimes, this means more than just wearing a different top or shoes with a certain pair of shoes, it means, going out of the box! Which is also something I love because it is a way to challenge what you're used to and try something new, while not having to go out and buy something new! Know what I mean?

This outfit is basically my take on a great summer outfit. The only thing I would change if I had one, is the black hat to a white one (much more cooler.) Or a white hat with a black bow or something. Anyways, I have become more of a fan of mixed prints as well, so I loved mixing these vintage aztec-ish printed shorts with a striped tank. These shoes have become more and more of my favorite as the summer has gone along... They can be dressed up or down so easily and they are comfortable and have a little bit of a wedge heel that is nice. The ankle strap is also just so flattering! I got them from the wonderful "Vintage Shoe Love" etsy shop! Lisa has a wonderful collection of vintage shoes, and some vintage bags/wallets/clutches as well. Amazing, please check it out! The awesome printed shorts are from my favorite vintage store here in Fresno, Yoshi Now! And the tank is second hand I think from Target - Mossimo?

Look #1 – summer lovin’

I am becoming more brave and loving the mixed print style, and I felt that stripes with these shorts went perfectly! I paired them with a cool black hat and simple summer wedges – I think this look could be for a party near the beach, a night on the town, or shopping and lunch with girlfriends during the day. I just kept thinking, summer… summer.. summer.

Hello all! I am getting over a cold over here, so this won't be long. I am going to start doing outfit posts on here, as well as elsewhere, so stay tuned, but as a part of trying to update this here blog more, I wanted to kick off another regular post that is to show how much I adore all of you fashionable ladies out there, whether it be on chictopia, lookbook, tumblr, or all of your blogs, I am constantly flooded with inspiration - it is sometimes overwhelming! So, I thought the best way to open up all of this inspiring material to you is through a regular blog post on some of my favorite/most inspiring outfits as of late. I am a little behind, so this one will be in two parts and it is scattered over the last couple of weeks... I apologize for that! So, I will hope to do this weekly or every couple of weeks.

and thanks to Erin of calivintage for the idea - she does a weekly outfit favorites over on her blog. Like I said, inspiration from all of you whether it be through your fashion, style, words, taste, etc.

Iris, Fashion Zen

I am so in love with this! Simple, and chic. I have a new affinity for red and this is just perfect - the belt, clutch and sunglasses aren't overdoing the matching of the red in the shoes - It all feels so subtle and effortless - the slouchy and sleek trousers and blouse couldn't have fit better. Iris has been a fashion inspiration of mine for awhile, she really knows how to dress!

Chloe, Betises de Style

Another lovely lady who I am a big fan of in the fashion department. I think there is a trend here of me loving certain matching pieces in an outfit. The mary janes, clutch and glasses go together so well and really make the white, long dress and draped beige cardigan pop - I love the layer she added to this dress - it makes it oh-so boho chic and yet it remains classic with the shoes and her hair up in a bun. So much love for this!

Isquisofrenia

Doesn't this just scream hippie, 70's, music concert? I looooove the slouchy, bell sleeved blouse and she's wearing the American Apparel disco pants that I can't bring myself to even try on in fear of embarrassment and not being able to get them off... The hat, the jewelry just top it all off for a perfectly hippie look.

Ring my Bell

Loving this menswear inspired look. I adore the gal who can go menswear with a pair of pleated trousers and then just add so many perfect feminine touches that don't seem at all out of the ordinary. This lace blouse, Brian Atwood heels and the classic black quilted Chanel bag are perfect additions to these grey trousers.

Annie, Time Enough for Drums

Simply stated - so cute! I have been wanting a Chambray dress and this outfit reminds me how much I really need one, like, now! Annie's styling also reminds me that I need to get onto wearing and sorting through all of the gloves my Grammy gave me - she has a lot! I love the hat, the gloves, and the cute socks folded over. I think this outfit portrays how versatile a Chambray dress can be - and how cute is this one?

I know, I know.. it's been too long! I have yet to really get onto a good schedule of blogging, reading blogs, updating my etsy, updating YOU about my updated vintage, etc. etc. etc. But I am still actively working on it... yes, I am. And I have a ton of exciting things happening, which you will have to stay tuned for!

Let's see, I have wanted to blog about a few things, tons of new items in the Vintage Strings etsy shop, and are going fast! I'm trying to update more than once a week, so check back regularly. Next, I've been trying to keep up on my fashion, whether thru my tumblr, fashion blogs, and/or style.com and have wanted to post my favorites from the 2011 resort collections! I've stopped worrying and being agitated with the fact that I can't ever afford any of what I see on the fashion runways and have decided to look to it as inspiration and finding ways to recreate or have a look inspired by them, with my usual thrift store and discount finds! This is my reality, but there's nothing that says I can't make it my own on my budget and how I shop. I felt like for a lot of my favorites, and there were many, I loved and hated a lot of the outfits... is that weird? I've noticed I'm that way with a lot of things, stores, brands, designers, etc. I'm very rarely all around satisfied with an entire collection. But on the positive side, I really loved what I loved, and saw so much influence from vintage pieces that go into my shop. I love seeing the vintage in the new, although some may disagree. Don't get me wrong, I love new and innovative fashion, but I'm such a lover of the past and a new discovery or reinvention of it is just that much better...

So... my Resort 2011 favorites, part 1.

Balenciaga

What I am loving about most of Balenciaga's collection for Resort 2011 is the brightness, the prints and the SHOES. Let me just say if you don't know already, I love yellow/mustard/gold/whatever you want to call it and so when I saw that bright mustard dress and those heels with the mustard straps... swoon! I am in love with a printed skirt or trousers with a solid wide armed blouse or structured jacket. The colors were great for this collection, but some of the silhouettes of the solid colored suits were not my favorite. Like I said, I had a love/hate affair - with every favorite in a collection, I had a non-favorite, ha!

Chanel

This last one here is what I would like to call "Chanel, what?" The first four were probably my only favorites from the Chanel collection - usually I always love the Chanel Resort but this year it was a little odd and all over the place and less than special. And this is nothing against normalcy, I'm pretty normal and plain myself, but when I think Chanel, I think... Coco Chanel! Fabulous! Gorgeous! Sophisticated! And this last look really just threw me for a loop I guess. Maybe it's just the jean skirt, and what shade it is. The boots and top are fine... but otherwise, I don't know about that skirt. My favorites, however, were gorgeous. The tucked sea blue jumpsuit, the striped maxi, the brown cords, and white pantsuit all just screamed at me - I loved their simplicity and effortlessness... Which is how I think of "resort" - vacation, you want to feel comfortable and simple and enjoy yourself but look chic while you're at. These emanated that for me.

Dior

This Dior collection just screams retro! I loved the old fashioned silhouettes, big fluffed up hair, and the bow accents. I have an affinity towards bows in any way it seems, lately, and so this was instant love. I am a fan of the Peter Pan collar like on the seafoam sheer dress, and I was completely enamored over the hot pink number, but just had to add it because of it's completely amazing reference and inspiration from the 50s/60s.

Diane Von Furstenberg

I love DVF. I think her representation of fashion and timelessness is on point with a woman's figure. She definitely knows how to make things sleek, chic, and remain innovative while still remaining somewhat timeless. I find that each of these looks and pieces are all so versatile as well. I love her short sleeved rompers especially because of the pattern - it isn't too ridiculous and bright, it's simple black and white/black and blue and therefore isn't accenting anything you don't want it to, while still allowing for that great summer one piece. The black slouchy dress with leather tie sash is just perfect. It's not too fancy, but really you could dress it up or down, which again, the versatility is key. I am loving the espadrilles and especially the mustardy yellow ones, of course. Last, the khaki trench with the peek-a-boo over the knee stockings is just perfect! Genius. (Reminds me of Clothesure's post about the peekaboo trend!)
